Privacy & analytics

Analytics are optional and off until you choose “Allow analytics.” You can change your choice below or at the bottom of any participating page. The site works the same either way.

What is counted

With your permission, Datadog helps me understand visits to the homepage, Photos, Labs, Hunter, NYC Weekly, and published notes, plus navigation between those pages. Tool pages, hidden experiments, and this privacy page are excluded.

Page addresses contain only their public path. Search parameters, URL fragments, referring pages, link text, form contents, and keystrokes are not sent. There are no session recordings, automatic click recordings, account identities, or advertising profiles.

Datadog’s browser SDK also includes basic browser and device information, page timing, and a random session identifier. Requests necessarily reach Datadog with your IP address; IP and location enrichment are disabled for this application. I do not set a name, email address, or persistent user identifier.

Your choice

Your preference is saved in this browser for up to 180 days. If allowed, a first-party session cookie groups visits into a session, which expires after 15 minutes of inactivity or four hours. You can turn analytics off at any time; this stops new collection and does not erase events already received.

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control keep analytics off, even if you previously allowed it. Clearing browser storage resets your choice. Private browsing and blocked storage can also prevent analytics.

Where the data goes

Events go to Datadog’s US1 service for this site’s product analytics. Datadog’s default product analytics retention is 15 months. Learn more in Datadog’s privacy policy.

This describes the optional site analytics. Cloudflare also processes requests to deliver and protect the website.
